A garage door installation with Go Garage Doors covers measuring your opening, removing the old door, installing the new door with tracks, springs and hardware, balancing it, safety-testing the opener and hauling everything away. Most single-door installs take 3 to 5 hours on site, and you approve a firm installed price before we order anything.

What an installation includes

Choosing the door itself is a separate conversation, and it lives on our new garage doors page and in the door showroom. This page is about what happens once you have picked one.

How a garage door replacement runs

  1. Measure and confirm. We check the opening, headroom, backroom and side room, and confirm the door you chose fits the space.
  2. Approve the price. You get a firm installed price covering the door, tracks, springs and haul-away. Nothing is ordered until you say yes.
  3. We order the door. Doors are built to your opening. Lead times vary by door and by custom colors, windows and wind-load-rated or carriage house designs, so we give you the install date when you approve the quote.
  4. Install day. A two-person crew takes down the old door, hangs the new one, and finishes with the balance and safety tests.
  5. Walkthrough. We show you how the door, the release cord and the opener behave before we leave.

How long it takes

Most single-door replacements are finished in 3 to 5 hours, including haul-away. A wide double door, a door with a lot of glass, or an opener swap alongside the door adds time, and we tell you the window when we book. The longer wait is usually the build time for a custom or wind-rated door, not the install itself.

Getting your garage ready

Whether a like-for-like replacement needs a permit varies by town. We tell you what we know when we quote, and we never start work that needs a permit without one.

Built for the coast

A door near Wilmington's beaches and tidal creeks lives with salt air, humidity and the occasional hurricane. We match the install to that: galvanized or coated steel, stainless or nylon hardware where it counts, and tight perimeter and bottom seals to keep out blowing rain and damp. Many coastal NC addresses require a door rated for the local design wind pressure under the NC building code (Grand Strand addresses in South Carolina follow South Carolina's code), so we confirm that at the measure, before you order. Read more in our guide to wind-rated garage doors in NC.

If your home is in a flood zone, or the garage sits at ground level under a raised house, tell us. It changes what we recommend for the bottom seal and the door's lower sections.

What happens to the old door

We take it, along with the old springs, tracks, hardware and packaging, on install day. Haul-away is part of the job rather than an add-on, so you are not left with a stack of sections at the curb.

Still deciding what to buy?

Start with the new door cost guide for budgeting, then read about insulation and R-value, door materials and wind-rated doors. If you want a new opener at the same time, see garage door openers.

What we check before the door goes up

A new door is only as solid as the framing it mounts to. We look at the jambs and header for rot or sagging, which humid coastal air makes more likely, and at the slab and sill for heaving. If something needs fixing first, we point it out during the measure and quote it separately, so there are no surprises on install day. The same goes for the opener bracket and the ceiling it hangs from.

The safety test at the end

We do not leave until the door is balanced, which means it stays put when lifted halfway by hand, and the opener passes its auto-reverse test with a board flat on the floor. We confirm the photo eyes see each other, the release cord works, and the limits are set so the door seats at the floor without slamming. Then we hand you the remotes and the walkthrough.

FAQ

Common questions

How long does garage door installation take?
Most single-door replacements take 3 to 5 hours on site, including haul-away. Custom and wind-rated doors are built to order, so the wait before install day depends on the door you choose.
Do you remove and dispose of my old door?
Yes. Removal and haul-away of the old door, springs, tracks and packaging are part of the installed price.
Do I need to be home during the installation?
Someone needs to be there to let us in, approve the work and do the final walkthrough. You do not need to watch the whole install.
Will my existing opener work with the new door?
Often yes, if it is within its service life and rated for the new door's weight. We test it and tell you either way, and reset its limits for the new door.
Do I need a permit?
It depends on the town and on whether the job is like-for-like. We tell you what we know when we quote, and we do not start work that needs a permit without one.
Does my coastal home need a wind-rated door?
Many coastal NC addresses require a door rated for the local design wind pressure under the NC building code. We check your address at the measure and tell you before you order. See wind-rated garage doors in NC.
Which garage door brands do you install?
Amarr, C.H.I., Haas and Clopay. You can browse Amarr and Clopay in our door showroom, and we install LiftMaster, Genie and Chamberlain openers to match.
Where do you install garage doors?
Across our Wilmington service area: Wilmington, Leland, Hampstead, Southport, Oak Island, Carolina Beach, Wrightsville Beach, Shallotte, Ocean Isle Beach, Surf City, Burgaw and Jacksonville.
