Belt, chain or wall-mount?
- Belt drive: our default recommendation: near-silent, low maintenance, ideal under bedrooms and bonus rooms
- Chain drive: the budget workhorse; more noise, fine for detached garages
- Wall-mount (jackshaft): mounts beside the door, frees the ceiling for storage or high lifts, and pairs well with cycling storage and shop garages
Battery backup earns its keep in NC
When a summer thunderstorm or a hurricane remnant knocks power out, a battery-backup opener still opens and closes for a day or more of normal use. If you've ever crawled for the red release cord in the dark over a car hood, you already know the value. It's standard on the models we recommend most.
Smart features worth having
Phone control and open/close alerts earn their spot: knowing the door closed behind the kids, or closing it from the beach, beats a novelty app. We set up the app, remotes, keypad and car HomeLink pairing before we leave.
