A smart opener connects to Wi-Fi so you can open, close and check your garage door from your phone. A battery-backup opener keeps working when the power goes out. Both are available on belt-drive and wall-mount models from the brands we install, and we set up the app, remotes and keypad before we leave.

Battery backup: why it matters in North Carolina
Hurricane season runs June through November, and remnants of coastal storms reach the Triangle with wind and downed lines. Summer thunderstorms and winter ice cause outages too. A standard opener cannot run without power. You are left pulling the red release cord and lifting the door by hand, usually in the dark.
A battery-backup opener has a rechargeable battery that takes over automatically when the power drops. You open and close the door with the remote or wall button as usual. Runtime varies by model, from a number of cycles on some units to a day or more of normal use on others, so ask us for the rating on the opener we quote. The battery wears out over time, so plan to replace it on the manufacturer's schedule and test it by unplugging the opener once or twice a year.
Smart openers: myQ and Aladdin Connect
Smart openers connect to your home Wi-Fi. LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers use the myQ app. Genie openers use Aladdin Connect. Each platform works with its own brand's openers, so they are not interchangeable. What the apps offer varies by model and app version, but typically includes:
- Opening and closing the door from anywhere
- Alerts when the door opens, or stays open too long
- Schedules and shared access for family members
- A history of when the door moved
Signal matters. Garages are often at the edge of Wi-Fi range, and we check the connection at install. A small extender near the garage fixes most weak spots. Which smart-home integrations your unit supports depends on the model, and we will tell you what to expect before you buy.
Which do you need?
- Battery backup if the garage is your main entrance, you work from home, or you have ever been stuck in the dark in an outage
- Smart control if kids come home on their own, you share the garage with a rental or guests, or you have ever wondered whether you closed it
- Both if you want a door that works in a storm and tells you what it is doing
The drive type is a separate choice: a belt drive for quiet, or a wall-mount opener that frees ceiling space. Our garage door openers page covers those.
What we do on installation
- Size the opener to the door's balanced weight, or install it on the door you already have
- Set force and travel limits and test the photo-eye sensors and auto-reverse
- Connect the opener to Wi-Fi and set up the app on your phone
- Program the remotes, wireless keypad and your car's HomeLink buttons
- Show you the release cord, and how the door behaves on battery power
See the brand pages for LiftMaster and Genie openers, and the opener installation cost guide for budgeting.
Already have an opener?
Many newer openers can be paired with the manufacturer's Wi-Fi accessory. Older units usually cannot, and we will tell you so rather than sell you something that will not work. If your opener is failing, our opener repair page covers repair, and we will say plainly when a new smart or battery-backup unit is the better spend.
Security and sharing
A smart opener adds an account to protect. Use a strong, unique password and turn on two-step sign-in where the app offers it. Give family members their own access instead of sharing yours, and remove people you no longer want in the app. If you sell the house or move out of a rental, remove the opener from your account so the new owner can start fresh.
