Modern & Glass

Modern Steel garage doors

Flush and plank-face steel doors, including wood-look finishes, for a house that wants no panel grid at all.

Modern Steel drops the panel grid entirely. Its faces are flush or plank. A flush door is a single flat plane, broken only by the lines where the sections meet. A plank door carries horizontal grooves that read as boards laid side by side. Either way the door becomes a surface instead of a pattern, which is what a contemporary house, a mid-century ranch or a modern townhome usually asks for. On those houses a raised-panel door looks like it came from a different building.

Finishes include Ultra-Grain, Clopay's wood-look finish, so a plank-face door can read as stained wood without being wood. That gives a modern house the warmth of a wood garage door and leaves the upkeep of wood behind. It pairs well with black window frames, vertical cladding and a restrained entry. If you prefer a solid color, the flush face in a dark gray or a crisp white is the cleanest option in the collection, and it lets the rest of the house carry the detail.

The door is steel, and Clopay lists insulated versions alongside the standard build. An attached garage is the place to specify insulation, and it matters more than it seems on a flat, wide door that faces the sun for most of a Triangle summer afternoon. A detached garage that nobody heats or cools can go without. The R-value depends on the construction, and we give you the figure for your door in the quote.

Windows, where used, keep to the same restraint: a narrow horizontal row of glass in the top section rather than a decorative pattern. Because the face has no detail to hide behind, the proportions of the door and the placement of the glass carry the design. Color and finish are the main decisions, and the wood-look finishes especially need to be seen in daylight. We bring finish samples to the consultation for exactly that reason. On a flush door, the seams between sections are the only line you will see, so the way they align with the window row and the trim around the opening is worth a look before you commit.

Two other Clopay collections sit close by. Avante and VertiStack Avante are the full-view glass doors, for a more dramatic modern look. Canyon Ridge includes modern designs in a faux-wood composite. Modern Steel is the steel option among them, and it is the one to choose when you want the clean lines without glass or composite.

On cost, Modern Steel is in the middle of the Clopay collections. It sits above the standard raised-panel door and below the glass and composite lines. At the free consultation we measure, show you finishes against your house and give you a firm installed price before anything is scheduled.
