VertiStack Avante garage doors

A conventional sectional door rolls up and then runs back along the ceiling on horizontal track. VertiStack Avante does something different. Its glass sections stack vertically above the opening, so nothing extends into the room. That frees the ceiling for lighting, storage or a car lift, and it can make a glass door possible in a garage where the ceiling is low or sloped and standard track will not fit. Clopay describes it as combining the beauty of a glass garage door with an aluminum frame.

The sections themselves are the same aluminum frame and full-view glass as the Avante door. Closed, the face reads as a wall of glass, and open it leaves the garage clear above the opening. It suits a contemporary house, a garage converted to a studio or gym, and any modern build where the ceiling plane matters. It is also a good way to open a garage to a patio or a yard, since the full opening is clear and nothing hangs over a car or a workbench. It is worth thinking about how you use the room, too. With no track overhead, a lift, hoist or hanging storage can go where a conventional door would block it, and the lighting plan can be laid out without working around rails.

Insulated glass is available, and in a converted space or an attached garage that is worth discussing. A large area of glass lets in heat as well as light, and a Triangle summer will test it. Privacy is the other question. Full-view glass is the point of the door, so think about what you keep in the garage and which way it faces. Frame colors come from Clopay's sample range, and we bring samples so you can judge them against your trim and siding. A dark frame gives a modern house a sharper outline. Because the whole door is frame and glass, there is very little else to hide behind, so the proportions of the opening matter, and a door that looks balanced on a drawing should be checked against the actual wall.

This collection is built to order, so we quote it per door after measuring. It sits at the top of the Clopay range on cost, alongside the standard Avante, and the vertical track and the glass both add to the figure. If a glass door appeals but the ceiling is ordinary, the standard Avante is the simpler and less expensive route to the same face.
